Tom Mahon
By no stretch of the imagination is there any similarity between London’s Savile Row and Brampton’s main square. Yet....in a three storey building in this Cumbrian market town is the studio/workshop of master tailor Tom Mahon, or, in the formality of his trade, simply Mr Mahon. His was the first port of call after the new Dymond Guide to the Lake District and Cumbria was delivered this morning from printers The Amadeus Press. Cumbrian-born and then schooled in Brampton, Tom learnt his trade at Anderson and Sheppard in Savile Row. He gave me a quick whizz round his premises where the personal paper patterns in the cutting room hang like kippers in a smoking kiln. Prince Charles has been a client and today another client is Jonathan Ive, Apple’s chief designer, responsible for the iPod, the iPhone, iPad, iMac and much more. And so the circle was complete: Tom Mahon, Brampton, Jonathan Ive, Apple, California and the Dymond Guide to the Lake District and Cumbria...written on an iMac.
